What is a Model United Nations conference?

A Model United Nations conference, often abbreviated and referred to as an MUN conference, is a simulation of the United Nations and its different bodies. Students participating in the conference take on the role of delegates from different UN member states. At a least a month before the conference takes place, students choose a country that they would like to represent. They also choose a particular committee (for example the Political and Financial Committee or the Security Council) in which they will advocate the opinions of their country.

The duty of each student – delegate is to prepare a resolution. A resolution represents the opinion and position of a country regarding a specific topic that is to be discussed in the committee. During the conference itself, delegates debate, make speeches, merge resolutions and negotiate with other countries. The aim of each delegate is that a resolution which represents their nation’s interests is voted for by the committee.

Why participate in a Model United Nations conference?

There are plenty of reasons to participate in an MUN conference. First of all, you gain close insight into current global issues and affairs and international relations. You learn how different bodies of the real United Nations operate; you also learn about the different rules and procedures in discussions and debates in committees in the real United Nations.

MUN conferences are great for finding new people who have common interests with you. It is also a great opportunity to not only improve your English, but also to learn how to become confident when speaking in front of others. So do not hesitate and take part!

Why are there no host families this year?

During the PORGMUN 2014 up to half of the delegates found temporary home at various host families. Whilst being a cheaper option, which also offered more insight into the czech culture, we have received various negative reviews.

These were mainly due to the fact that a large number of families didn't live anywhere near the school or the center, resulting in traveling taking up more time than if one stayed in a hotel. It is also easier for everyone, since responsible for the students are the teachers. Instead of host families, accomodation will be provided by hotel.

Where and how am I going to eat?

The Nový PORG will provide you with delicious lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be meal options to choose from. There will also be plenty of snacks throughout the day, including coffee. At the Opening Ceremony we will also provide light snacks for the delegations.

The hotel offers breakfasts, however, these are not included in the price in order to make the price as reasonable as possible. If you would like to have breakfasts at the hotel, the price is 5 Euros per day. The option is included in the Registration form.

How much money should I bring?

If you are planning on having a breakfast at the hotel, having dinner at a restaurant (usually around 100 CZK) and going out in the evening every day, 1500 CZK (60 Euros) should be enough for you. If you have a bank account, which has reasonable fees on withdrawing money in foreign countries, it would be easiest and most comfortable for you to use your card at any of the ATMs around Prague. There is at least one ATM on all of the places of arrival (airport, train and bus station). If you would like to bring cash with you, it would be easier for you to exchange the money in your country.

How should I dress?

The MUN conferences are highly formal and thus appropriate clothing of participants must accompany it. Women and girls are expected to wear formal clothes and shoes, both in decent colours and shapes. The male delegates are expected to wear suits with shirts and ties.

If you represent country which is known for traditional accesories, feel free to wear them. Please refrain from too provocative and sexy clothes, as this may appear highly unprofessional. Also refrain from propagating any extremely inappropriate opinions with your clothes.
